The meaning of this scene may have gotten lost in translation, so I’ll try my best to explain it for fellow Chihayafuru fans!

In this scene, Shinobu-chan looks up because she thinks she has heard the ‘Since I could’ card being read. Just what is the significance of this card for her? Well, just as Chihayafuru or Impassionate Gods is Chihaya’s best card, Shinobu-chan probably feels like Shinoburedo or ‘Since I could’ belongs to her, as the poem starts with her name.

しのぶれど色にいでにけりわが恋は 物や思ふと人のとふまで

Shinoburedo/Iro ni ide nikeri/Wa ga koi wa/Mono ya omofuto/Hito no tofu made

Since I could not hide my love
People would always ask
If I was pining for someone

The second half of the poem also serves as the episode’s title, and it is also the card that decides Chihaya’s match against Megumu.
